Benoit's Story
Six-Month-Old Baby Brother
Benoit was born on December 16, 2005, with serious congenital heart defects. He had his first surgical procedure the day after Christmas. During the weeks that Benoit's mom, Yvette, was in the hospital, she was constantly in awe of the treatment and compassion she experienced at the hands of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit nurses, doctors, and surgeons. Even though she lived in the area, she was given a room at the hospital so she could remain close to her newborn son. The nurses made extra efforts to give her time to bond with Benoit, something that she and her baby both desperately needed. They even provided her with meals throughout the day so she could focus on her son.
And she wasn't the only one who was being taken care of -- Benoit has four older brothers who would visit him every single day. They would come to the hospital after school, kiss their baby brother, and then head off to the Pediatric Unit, where they would play games and be comforted and entertained by Well Sibling Center staff. Now, Benoit's heart is healthy, and he's back at home with his family, getting stronger so that one day he'll be able to take on his big brothers. And maybe even win.
